Box finish quality

Authentic YSL boxes have a premium matte or satin finish with precise foil stamping on the logo. The gold YSL monogram is sharp and reflective. Fakes often have dull, flat, or peeling foil.

Bottle shape accuracy

YSL Black Opium and Libre bottles have very specific geometric profiles. The angles are precise and the glass is even in thickness. Fakes often have slightly rounded edges where the authentic bottle should be sharp.

Magnetic or tight cap closure

Many YSL fragrance caps seat tightly and evenly. The cap material (often lacquered metal or heavy plastic) feels premium. Counterfeits use lighter, hollow caps that rattle.

Juice color

Black Opium EDP is a warm amber-brown. Libre EDP is golden yellow. Mon Paris is a clear light pink. If the color looks off — too pale, too dark, or hazy — the juice may be fake or degraded.

Internal bottle label

Authentic YSL bottles have a clean, precisely applied label (or engraved text) with correct font weight and spacing. The text 'Yves Saint Laurent' should be fully spelled out, not abbreviated, on the primary label.

Misspelled 'Yves Saint Laurent'

Any misspelling of the brand name, or the use of 'Saint' as 'St', on the primary label is a counterfeit indicator. The full name must appear on the box.

Made outside France or Italy

Authentic YSL fragrances are manufactured in France or Italy under L'Oréal Luxe. Any other country of manufacture on the label is a red flag.

No concentration label

Every authentic YSL fragrance bottle and box clearly states the concentration — Eau de Parfum, Eau de Toilette, or Parfum. Missing or vague labeling is a fake indicator.

Off or chemical scent

Counterfeit YSL fragrances often have a sharp, chemical, or harsh opening that quickly fades. Authentic Black Opium opens with bright coffee and vanilla; Libre opens with lavender and orange blossom. A 'gasoline' note is a fake warning.

Batch code absent or blurred

All authentic YSL fragrance boxes have a clear, readable batch code on the bottom flap. A missing, smudged, or printed-over code is a counterfeit sign.
